Human Health = Human Potential/Athletic Potential (Part #1)

Human Potential: It is the capacity for humans to improve themselves through studying, training, and practice, to reach the limit of their ability to develop aptitudes and skills. The question is, what are the steps necessary to achieve your human potential..? It starts with a foundation of overall health and wellbeing.  Human Health = Human Potential/Athletic Potential 

Throughout our life time we all strive to reach our full potential. It goes without saying that in work, life, and sports, we all want to maximize our talents and skills but many times there are road blocks that never allow us to see how far we can go. One of those roadblocks may be overlooking our overall health and wellbeing. As endurance athletes we have a large base of fitness, but fitness doesn't always correlate to overall health. A lean physique doesn't mean you are healthy which is why it is difficult to sometimes know how healthy someone is just by looking at them. The next few months I will outline a few steps to build your platform of health, today beginning with arguably one of the most foundational building blocks of overall health and well-being: sleep. 

In our society sleep is often viewed as a luxury and not a necessary component of health, longevity and performance in all aspects of life. This of course can't be further from the truth, and often limits so many people on reaching your full potential.  What is even more concerning is that a lack of sleep is even seen as a badge of honor in certain social groups. With our busy lives it is very easy to reduce sleep to fit in other commitments and downplay the harmful affects that chronic sleep deprivation cause. If you are serious about reaching your full potential, sleep is the first step in creating a strong foundation of health in order to have the capacity become a high performer. Begin by implementing some of the recommendations listed in the diagram below which are outlined in more detail in the book, PEAK by Dr. Marc Bubbs.
